How pose tracking finds a joint fault

11 Jul 2026

A swing fault usually has a single root cause and several visible symptoms. An early extension in the hips, for instance, shows up as a steep swing plane, a thin strike, and a blocked follow-through — three separate-looking problems that all trace back to one joint moving wrong at one moment.

Golf tracks the major joints frame by frame through the swing video — hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and knees — using pose estimation to locate each one's position in every frame. That gives a full kinematic sequence: the order and timing in which each joint starts and stops moving.

Comparing that sequence against an expert reference swing of the same club and shot type isolates which joint's timing diverges first. Everything downstream of that joint tends to compensate for it, which is why fixing the root joint often resolves several symptoms at once, rather than treating each symptom separately.

This is also why generic swing tips don't always help — "keep your head still" might be the right advice for one golfer and irrelevant for another whose actual issue is hip timing three frames earlier. Joint-level tracking points at the specific mechanics behind your specific swing.
